A Commanding Officer and a Deputy Superintendent of Police are among the three officers injured in a fierce gunfight with terrorists in South Kashmir on Wednesday. While the gunfight is still underway, the injured security personnel have been airlifted to Srinagar.

Police sources said a joint team of the J&K Police and the Army had launched an operation in the forests of south Kashmir’s Kokernag on Tuesday evening after inputs about the movement of terrorists in the area.

They said that on Wednesday, the search party led by the senior officers came under fire, leaving three officers critically wounded. The officers, police sources said, include an Army Colonel, who was commanding a battalion in South Kashmir, an Army Major and a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Sources said that it was difficult for security personnel to push reinforcements and evacuate the injured personnel as the terrorists were firing incessantly.
