New controversy in India after the Asian country decided to change its name to Bharat. This is not yet official, but there have already been several statements by its leaders in this direction and they have been presented as such at the upcoming G20 summit being held there.

It was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who used this term to announce the G20 meeting. There is a reason for this name, however, and that is because it is Hindi for India.

President Droupadi Murmu‘s dinner invitation to foreign leaders attending the summit describes her as “President of Bharat”. In addition, several ministers from the ruling BJP applauded the move, but opposition leaders questioned its purpose.

All official Indian websites still use the term “Government of India” and still refer to Ms. Murmu as President of India. The use of Bharat in the invitation comes two days after Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the BJP’s ideological mentor, said the country should be called Bharat instead of India.

“Sometimes we use India so that those who speak English can understand it. But we should stop using this. The name of the country Bharat will remain Bharat wherever we go in the world,” he explained.

India’s next step is the Amrit Kaal

On Tuesday, several BJP politicians welcomed the move, calling it a proud moment for the country: “Happy and proud that our civilisation is boldly moving towards Amrit Kaal,” tweeted Himanta Biswa Sarma, chief minister of Assam state.

Amrit Kaal, which translates as “golden era”, is a term the prime minister and other government officials are using to refer to the years leading up to 2047, when India will be 100 years old. They say that by then India will be among the most prosperous and developed countries in the world.
