During preliminary inquiry, Mamata’s brother Mithilesh Dubey, 28, told police that his sister had confided in him that her in-laws were harassing her for dowry, and even assaulted her over it. As per Dubey’s statement, Mamata married Ankit on December 2, 2022, in their village in Uttar Pradesh. Before the wedding, Ankit’s parents had demanded Rs 2.5 lakh dowry from Mamata’s family, of which Rs1.8 lakh was paid in cash.
In his complaint, Dubey stated that Mamata had telephoned her family that her husband’s family had been beating her up over dowry and was denying money for her medicines. She was under tremendous mental pressure as her in-laws were harassing her a lot, states the FIR.
After Mamata allegedly died by suicide on Sunday, her family filed a complaint with MIDC police station. Police booked Ankit Tiwari, his father Jayprakash, mother Naginadevi, sisters Vinita and Ankita under sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 498A (subjecting woman to cruelty by husband or the relative of the husband) and 34 (common intention) of IPC.
