The police in Telangana’s Warangal Sunday registered an FIR against seven third-year students of Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) for allegedly ragging their junior. In his complaint, the student from Rajasthan told the police he was abused and physically assaulted by his seniors because he didn’t give in to their demands.
Speaking to indianexpress.com, Inspector N Venkateshwarlu of Matwada police station said the incident happened on September 14 when the senior students were celebrating someone’s birthday at the hostel premises when the complainant was passing by.
“They asked him to go get some water for them. He said he had a lot to study and prepare for the exam the next day and went away to his room. Later, the seniors came to his room and questioned how he dared to not listen to them. They beat him up in the room,” said Venkateshwarlu.
Based on the complaint, the police have invoked sections 323 (punishment of voluntarily causing simple hurt), 340 (wrongful confinement), and 294 B (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place, to the annoyance of others) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Prohibition of Ragging Act against the senior students.
While a police inquiry is progressing, the college administration has also initiated an internal probe.
KMC principal Dr D Mohan Das told reporters a fight took place between the junior and senior students and it was not a case of ragging. Das said the parents of all seven students, who face the ragging allegations, have been summoned,
Assuring action against the culprits, Das said the administration is currently looking into the complaint and the anti-ragging cell of the college will meet all the students concerned on September 19.
In February this year, KMC was in the news after first-year PG student Dr Dharawath Preethi allegedly died by suicide due to ragging and harassment from batch senior Dr MA Saif. Dr Preethi was found unconscious at the MGM Hospital while on duty and later succumbed to multi-organ failure.

Following an investigation, Dr Saif was arrested by police and suspended from the medical college. He was granted bail in April, and the Telangana High Court this month revoked his suspension.
A few days ago, 10 students at Hyderabad’s Gandhi Medical College were suspended for a year and expelled from the hostel after a complaint of ragging was received by UGC’s anti-ragging committee which recommended the medical college to inquire and initiate action.
The suspended MBBS students, five each from the second and third-year batches, were reportedly drunk and summoned the freshers to their hostel room at 2 am to harass and intimidate them.
