Government higher secondary school at Behnipora, Handwara here has just three rooms for more than 450 students.
The teachers at the school said they have to accommodate over 450 students in just three rooms are makes it difficult to carry out the class work.
The school has two more tin rooms where the students cannot sit during summers because of heat.
“When the temperature goes high, the roof and the walls of the tin rooms get heated up,” said 9th class student Rafiq Ahmad.
The teachers said they alternatively conduct the classes of the students. “One day we take classes of students of 9th under open sky, next day we do with 10th class,” said Nisar Ahmad a teacher.
There are 14 lecturer posts sanctioned for the school, but in place there are only two. “12 posts of lecturers are vacant,” sources said.
Similarly, of the 6 sanctioned teacher posts, only 2 are working as masters.
The school was initially established in 1944, upgraded to middle level in 1965 and to higher secondary level in 2005.
This school caters to more than 15 villages in this far flung area of Behnipora, said Nisar Ahmad.
“We are living in a far flung area, where more facilities should be provided, but the authorities never visit here and the infrastructure of the school seems to be no concern for them,” said Tariq Ahmad, a villager of Behnipora.
When contacted, Chief Education Officer Kupwara Mohammad Shafi said: “We will look if the land available to the school is enough for constructing a new building and playground.”
