JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Thursday passed an order approving the renaming of Udhampur railway station to “Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Railway Station”, in honour of the Army braveheart.
Captain Mahajan, from Udhampur’s Adarsh Colony, was an officer of the 9 PARA (Special Forces of the Indian Army) who laid down his life while defending the country during the February 2016 terror attack on the Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute building in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
He had also shot dead a terrorist in the operation.
An official order for the renaming, approved by the Union Ministry for Home Affairs, undersigned by IAS Sanjeev Verma, Secretary to the UT administration, stated: “Sanction is hereby accorded to the naming of ‘Udhampur’ railway station as ‘Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Railway Station’ in district Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir.”
On September 7, a day after the MHA gave its nod to the renaming, Union minister Dr Jitendra Singh wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Janmashtmi Gesture for UDHAMPUR: Thanks PM Sh Narendra Modi ji.
In response to our request, the Government of India has approved the naming of Udhampur Railway Station… A communication to this effect has been sent to the UT Government of Jammu And Kashmir to formally issue the required Gazette notification (sic).”
